WIC Stands for Women, Infants, and Children and is also called the Special Supplemental Nutrition Programs.  WIC is a federally funded program designed to provide food to low-income children, age zero to five, as well as pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women.  The program provides a combination of nutritional education, supplemental foods, breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals for health care.  The WIC Program at the Caswell County Health Department provides services for over 600 eligible women, infants, and children.

Participation in WIC during pregnancy is associated with lower rates of infant deaths.  Children enrolled in WIC are more likely to have better diets and a regular source of medical care.  In addition, they are less likely to have anemia and are more likely to receive age-appropriate immunizations.  For every dollar spent on prenatal WIC participation, North Carolina saves over $3.00 in newborn Medicaid costs.  The WIC Program contributes over $400,000 annually to our local economy.

The WIC Program actively promotes breatsfeeding as a "gold standard" for infant nutrition.  WIC strives to increase the incidence and duration of breastfeeding among women enrolled in the Program.  Caswell County has trained Breastfeeding Educators ready to assist mothers in making informed decisions about their infant feeding choice.  The WIC Program also instructs mothers in the basics of breastfeeding and has breastfeeding aids such as manual and electric breast pumps.
